The 2022 College Football rankings have finally arrived. We have had a fun season so far, and there is a major shock to the preseason rankings.
The Top Six has five teams that many would have predicted to be there and one surprise team that has taken the number one overall spot in the rankings.
Michigan and Alabama are on the outside looking in at the moment for the top four. The rest of the top four include #4 Clemson, #3 Georgia, #2 Ohio State, and the preseason shock, #1 Tennessee Volunteers.
The first rankings have not been a great indicator of the future playoffs, however, as the first-ever rankings included Mississippi State as Number one, whom we haven’t heard from since. We also have a few of these teams meeting in the coming weeks.
Tennessee and Georgia face off this Saturday and Ohio State and Michigan get to close the regular season out together. The winner of those games is going to be in the driver’s seat. Let’s break down the teams.
#1 Tennessee is the shock of the group. The Volunteers were 10000 to win the title before the season. They have taken down #17 Pitt, #20 Florida, #25 Kentucky, and #3 Alabama this season. Their offense has been the best in the country so far this year and is showing no signs of slowing down. Hendon Hooker has the lead in the Heisman race as well.
They get to go to Athens, GA to take on the Bulldogs this Saturday. If they win that game they will be in the East’s representative for the SEC Championship, and probably lock up a spot in the top 4.
#2 Ohio State has been lurking in the background this year. They started the year with a sluggish win over Notre Dame. They have handled business so far this year in the Big Ten. Their closest game was last weekend against Penn State.
The Buckeyes trailed in the fourth quarter before exploding in the last 7 minutes to win by 2 scores. They shouldn’t be tested until they face off against Michigan.
#3 Georgia is the defending national champion. They started the year with a beat down of the #11 Oregon Ducks, but since then they have been less impressive. Their defense is still full of dudes, but their offense can get stuck at times.
They have one of the most dominant players in the nation with Brock Bowers though. They have the goods to beat anyone, but there are still questions about the QB.All of those questions can be answered Saturday with a win against Tennessee. The winner may secure a spot in the final 4.
#4 Clemson has been lackluster for the expectation as well. They have the talent to win against anyone with a dominant defense line. Their title chances are in the hands of Dj Uiagalelei or if they make the change to Cole Klubnik.
Currently on the outside are Alabama and Michigan. They both have a chance to play their way into the tournament though. Alabama is in the leader for the SEC West and if they win the SEC title game, they will have a seat at the table. Michigan has the same opportunity as last year.
Take care of business now and shock Ohio State again and they will be in the dance again.
Ohio State was ranked No. 16 in the inaugural College Football Playoff rankings in 2014.
They went on to win it all 🏆
