CFB Rankings: What Are The Odds? | News Article by handicapper911.com

The first of the AP college football rankings were released on Monday, August 14 and with that, it is about that time to start looking at the odds for those teams opening up within the top 8 of the rankings.

No surprise at the top as the Georgia Bulldogs open as the preseason number 1 with a whopping 60 first-place votes.

They’ve also remained the preseason favorite to win the National Championship at 250 odds which are their shortest opening odds to win the title since before 2001.

At the number 2 ranking, for the first time since the 2005 season, the Michigan Wolverines have opened as a top-5 ranked program. They fell short of the National Championship game last season having lost in the playoffs to TCU. Surprisingly though, they are tied for the fourth shortest odds to win at 1000.

Ohio State makes it now nine times in the last ten seasons that they open with the AP rankings on their side in the top five with their third overall ranking. Many considered them the winners of their playoff matchup last season before just losing to Georgia in the final moments of the game.

With that, oddsmakers are expecting them to come out with a chip on their shoulder at 800 odds to win the title.

Rounding out the preseason college football playoff picture at number four are the Alabama Crimson Tide who have found themselves ranked number one in each of the last 14 seasons since 2007. They’ve won six National Championships since then and have the second shortest odds to do so one more time at 500.

Just outside of the playoff picture are the LSU Tigers. The Tigers took the CFB world by storm last season having gone in unranked and finished at 16. With that, their expectations are sky high at the fifth ranking and tied for the fourth shortest odds to win the Natty at 1000 odds.

USC has high expectations as well with the sixth ranking with this being the second time since 2017 that they open inside the top-10. At 1200 odds, these are their shortest preseason odds since the 2017 season as well. At the seventh spot, Penn State now opens inside of the top ten for the fourth time in the last seven seasons.

At 2500 preseason odds, it ties their lowest opening position since 2018. They went in unranked last season and finished seventh on the year. The number eight-ranked team in the country are the Florida State Seminoles. This is their first preseason ranking since 2018 and their first in the top 10 since 2017.

The Seminoles are coming off of a 13th-ranked finish last season on a 10-win season. Their 2000 preseason odds to win are their shortest opening odds since the 2017 season.
