The college football season has come to an end and we have gotten the finalist for the Heisman Trophy.
The Heisman has long been the most important individual award in college athletics but recently seems to have lost a little bit of its luster.
There was a time when that award was given to the best player in college football, now it seems that you have to be the QB on one of the best teams in the nation.
This year has certainly exemplified that trend.
The four finalists for the award this year are Stetson Bennett, the quarterback of the #1 Georgia Bulldogs, Max Duggan, QB of the #3 TCU Horned Frogs, CJ Stroud, QB of the #4 Ohio State Buckeyes, and the favorite for the award Caleb Williams, QB of the #8 USC Trojans.
Caleb Williams is going to run away with the award, but it is the others that were invited that give the award less intrigue than it used to have. The best players in college football are not being represented at this ceremony, and that is quite evident by including Stetson Bennett in this ceremony.
The award has been up for grabs until the last couple of weeks of the season. There were times when Hendon Hooker, QB of the Tennessee Volunteers, was the front-runner for the award.
He should be representing for this award. Hooker threw for 7 more touchdowns, 4 fewer interceptions, and had 300 air yards less than Bennett despite missing two games due to an ACL.
Georgia is loaded at every single position, 5 stars across the offensive line, 3 high draft picks at tight end, 5-star receivers, as well as the best defense in America. The national media has gotten lazy with their voting. If you are not the QB of a playoff-potential team, you cannot win the award any more.
Another example of this is the recent disregard for Running backs for the award. This season two players could have been invited to the event. Blake Corum of Michigan ran for 1,463 yards and 18 touchdowns and had 100 yards in every big ten games except Ohio state, where he was injured the week before.
Bijan Robinson of Texas also had a great year as a tailback. He rushed for 1,580 and 18 touchdowns as well. If voters watched college football as they should, it was blatantly obvious that these are two of the best players in the country.
By the same token for Stetson Bennett, Corum should have been invited if they are using the best player on the best team argument, but he is not a QB so they don’t value that the same.
The facts of the matter are that the Heisman Trophy award doesn’t have the same cache that it once had. It has become the College football Best Player on a great team award. This year it may well go to the best player in the nation, Caleb Williams, but at a minimum, no other positions being represented is a tragedy.

The Handicapper911 simulation model, which simulates every college football game thousands’ of times, is up +47.65 units over the last three years. We have released 520 total games with 284 WINS and 236 losses ATS for a win % of 54.62%. A $100 bettor of our NCAAF would have netted a profit of $4,765 and, a $1,000 bettor would have won $47,650 just on college football. We have released only a small number of NCAAF games so far this season.
