It has been six years since Colin Kaepernick suited up for an NFL team.
The NFL free agent and civil rights activist last played in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers in 2016 but is yet to step on the field for another team.
Kaepernick showed a lot of promise during his time with the 49ers. The 2011 second-round pick played in San Francisco from 2011-2016 and led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance against the Baltimore Ravens in 2012. They lost 34-31, but Kaepernick put his stamp on the team. There was a time when many thought Kaepernick would be a force of nature in the NFL, but injuries and politics got in the way.
Kaepernick was named the backup quarterback before the 2015-16 season after coming off a few surgeries. He was not the same player he was a few seasons before and decided to do something never before seen on the sidelines; Kaepernick kneeled during the National Anthem.
He kneeled in protest of the way Black Americans are treated and received mixed responses. He continued to kneel as the season went on and eventually became the starter again. He went on to start 11 games, but the 49ers went 1-10 during that time. After that season, he became a free agent, and the rest is history.
This all leads me to the question, will Colin Kaepernick ever play in the NFL again? The short answer is no. Even though he has been working out preparing to return, he is now 34 years old. If he ever had a chance to return to the NFL, it would have been when he was 30, 31, or 32.
His age is not the only reason he will never play again in the league. He is also a highly political and polarizing person. While nothing is wrong with that (it can often be a good thing), White NFL owners do not tend to look kindly upon it. NFL owners have made it very clear that they want players that are not involved in activism and politics, and that is not Colin Kaepernick.
It is unfortunate that Kaepernick never returned to the NFL; he could have been a great backup or third-string quarterback. However, he has not stopped being an activist, and for that, I applaud him.
